Testing and Tagging Perth

Testing of detachable leads/cordsets

A commonly unknown aspect when it comes to testing and tagging is the testing of detachable lead (cord sets) associated with certain appliances. Why do i have 2 tags on 1 appliance? is a commonly associated question.

Do I need to test the appliance’s lead (cord set)? The answer is YES, detachable leads (cord sets) do require testing to ASNZS 3760/2022. If the appliance’s lead takes 240V then under the current Australian standard it must be tested to the relevant standard.

If however the appliance converts 240V to 50V or less outlet such as a “USB” cable or “lighting cable” then only the aspect that is receiving 240V requires testing. the 12V lighting cable does NOT require testing to ASNZS 3760/2022 and should not be tagged. I.E if you have a standard Apple iPhone 10V charger with lighting cable attached, The base of the charger that plugs into the wall would require testing and lighting cable that plugs into your phone would not require testing.

Please note if any detachable lead regardless of voltage has excessive charring or visible damage then the appliance would be considered a fail until the damaged lead has been removed. A technician may place a fail tag on the lead that was attached, if this is a Perth Test and Tag Solution technician we would not charge the cost to fail a detachable lead if it was under 240V.

The above requirements are outlined in section 2.1 of the most recent, ASNZS 3760/2022.

If you have any further question’s regarding the testing of detachable leads we would more than happily assist and recommend you contact a friendly technician today.
