What are exit and emergency lights (EM Lighting)?

Exit and emergency lights are a key component to any evacuation protocol. EM lighting refers to both exit signs and exit luminaries.

Exit signs are used for directional purposes to guide personal to the nearest safe exit point or door. The Australian Standard AS/NZS 2293.1 outlines the location, size and height requirements for all exit signs.

Exit Luminaries are used for providing valid lighting throughout the given area for obvious safety reasons. Each luminary requires to stay active for up to 90 minutes from when the main electrical supply is disconnected.

EM Lighting is wired to the buildings electrical supply and in most cases will be isolated to its own electrical circuit. The process of testing an EM circuit involves disconnecting the main power supply at the distribution board. The duration of the test should last 90 minutes and each exit sign and luminary is assessed. Any failed lights or luminaries are reported individually and referred to with a unique asset ID.
