Compliance ⏱ 6 min read 📅 Updated Apr 2026 Electricity Regulations WHS Act 2022

Quick Answer If it plugs into a power point with a flexible cord, it generally needs to be test and tagged under the WHS Regulations 2022.

This guide explains what Perth Test and Tag Solutions (PTTS) tests, what is excluded, and how often testing if due, so you can give us accurate numbers for your quote.

WHAT NEEDS TESTING?

A Quick Guide for PTTS Clients

WHAT WE TEST FOR

Our standard electrical appliance testing to AS/NZS 3760:2022 measures key electrical parameters that indicate whether an appliance is, or has been, electrically compromised. Depending on the appliance, these tests include:

  • Earth Continuity

  • Insulation Resistance

  • Differential leakage

  • Polarity

  • Timed PRCD trip testing

  • Current leakage

Every appliance is also virtually inspected for any clear faults or electrical safety risks. The results for each appliance can be viewed in the test report provided on completion.

WHAT REQUIRES TESTING

If it plugs into a power point with a flexible cord, it generally needs to be tested and tagged under the WHS Regulations 2022.

When one appliance needs two tests

In some circumstances one appliance may require two tests. This only happens when the appliance has a detachable lead. If the lead can be detached, AS/NZS 3760:2022 requires the lead and the appliance to each have their own individual test. The appliance test and the lead test are different types of tests and measure different parameters.

Common items with detachable leads include:*

  • Monitors
  • Dock stations
  • Laptop chargers
  • Printers
  • Computers

*Not all appliances in this list have detachable leads. It varies a lot depending on the make, model and design of each appliance.

OTHER COMPLIANCE WE CAN SERVICE IN THE SAME VISIT

If required, PTTS can also take care of the rest of your compliance in the same visit.

WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY TEST AND TAG

  • Hardwired equipment with no plugSuch as fixed ovens, some hot water units and ducted air conditioning. These are checked by the electrician as part of the fixed installation and generally don't require any routine testing.
  • Battery-only devices while running on batteryTheir chargers and plug packs do need testing, but the units themselves do not.
  • Appliances and leads operating under 50VAny appliance or lead operating under 50 volts.
  • Medical equipment in patient care areasThis is tested under a separate standard, AS/NZS 3551.
  • Appliances for saleThese do not require testing unless sold second hand.

HOW OFTEN TESTING IS DUE

Under AS/NZS 3760, the retest interval depends on your industry and how hard the equipment is used.

PREPARING FOR TEST DAY

  1. Where practical, gather spare leads, power boards and stored equipment in one place so nothing is missed. Technicians will open clear communal cupboards to check for appliances, but will not check anything that may hold personal items. For example, drawers at workstations won't be checked, but cupboards in the printer room may be.
  2. Let staff know in advance that items will be briefly switched off and unplugged during testing.
  3. Tell us in advance about equipment that can't be powered down, such as servers or production lines, so we can schedule around it. Place a sticky note on anything critical if you are concerned.
  4. Arrange access to all rooms, storerooms and switchboards.
  5. Ask any staff who have work laptop chargers or other work-owned portable appliances that may require testing to bring them in on the day.

If you have any questions on the day, please let our friendly technicians know. We will work through and explain any questions or queries that come up.
